Case Study – The Borough Club House

Helping a new start-up find its feet

In Peterborough, the flagship development at Fletton Quays is set to welcome a new addition – The Borough Club House from Michael Calvin – bringing a boutique-style gym experience to the city for the first time.

Michael grew up in Peterborough, starting his working life at the well-known Power League at 16, before eventually moving to London 6 years ago to work as a Personal Trainer (PT) for athletes, celebrities and high-flyers of all kinds:

“Being schooled in Peterborough, I’ve always wanted to give back to the place I grew up – and since working as a PT in London, I’ve always wanted to have my own facilities too. Fitness is a big industry today and it’s at the forefront of many people’s daily lives – I want to bring a taste of the gym experience from a major city like London, to Peterborough.

“That means a gym that feels like home for those who use it – that feels exclusive, while welcoming people of all abilities and stages in their gym life; whether a beginner or professional athlete.”

A partner with experience

Starting a new business can feel daunting and when looking for an accountancy to partner with, Michael was after experience:

“I needed a partner that wasn’t going to say, ‘we’re new to the game’. I wanted someone with experience, who knew the right way to build a start-up. Bulley Davey sang from the same hymn sheet from the beginning; wanting to help my business develop.

“It’s not just the support either but believing in the brand too. I’ve been working with Keir (Warwick, Director) and Dan (Pinfold, Manager) and they’ve been phenomenal in believing and embracing this project. They moved quickly with us, which is perfect for a start-up when things are growing fast.”

Providing business and financial advice…

Speaking about working with The Borough Club House, Dan Pinfold described Bulley Davey’s work: “Whenever we meet with a new client, we always provide some initial advice for free – people often think they have to pay for every minute with an accountant, but ultimately we want to help businesses.

“In that first meeting, it was clear that Michael was passionate and had a strong plan for what he wanted to do – so we gave some planning advice to help him get started and then agreed to work together.

“Since then we’ve signed him up for Xero, a cloud accounting software that we are partnered with, to take the stress of finances off his hands and have fed back with weekly and monthly reports.

“This helps Michael and his team understand what’s coming in and out and we then provide business advice based on what we see; spotting opportunities to be more efficient or take certain decisions.”

Eyes on the future

Michael reflected on working with Bulley Davey so far: “For me the team have been dynamic, adapting to our needs and working with us in a way that suits the type of business I want to build – often being a sounding board for my ideas and helping me make them a reality.

“We’re set to open the gym in March 2020 and I’m excited for the future and working with Bulley Davey going forward!”
